What is Trigger Point Therapy?

Trigger Point Therapy is a form of massage, where deep pressure is applied to release sensitive, shortened or adhered areas deep within a muscle or connective tissue (fascia).

A trigger point is a highly sensitive area within a tight muscle band. The common, non-medical term is a “muscle knot”. It feels sore when pressed and can cause pain in the immediate area or even radiate to other parts of the body. A muscle’s trigger point can be activated due to overuse, trauma, inflammation, infections, nerve pain, and electrolyte imbalances.

When a trigger point becomes particularly sensitive, it may generate pain even without direct pressure. This is a key factor behind many cases of muscular pain that people experience daily. Trigger points are commonly found in areas like the neck, shoulders, lower back, and legs, making them a major contributor to muscle stiffness and tension-related discomfort.

By identifying and treating trigger points through techniques like Trigger Point Therapy, massage, stretching, and dry needling, muscle function can be restored, and pain can be significantly reduced. Understanding these points is crucial for managing chronic muscle pain and improving overall movement and flexibility.

Symptoms of Trigger Points

Dr. Janet Travell, a pioneer in the study of myofascial pain, defined a trigger point as a “hypersensitive nodule within a taut band of muscle tissue that can refer pain.” This means that pain caused by trigger points doesn’t always stay in one place—it can spread to other areas, often mimicking symptoms of other conditions like tension headaches, sciatica, or joint pain.

  • The most common symptom of a trigger point is a small, tender knot in the muscle that feels sore when pressed. This pain is usually confined to the affected muscle but can sometimes spread to surrounding areas.

  • Unlike typical muscle soreness, trigger points often cause referred pain, meaning the discomfort is felt in a different part of the body. For example, a trigger point in the neck may cause headaches, or one in the lower back could create pain down the leg, mimicking sciatica.

  • Muscles with active trigger points often feel tight, limiting movement and flexibility. This stiffness can make everyday activities—such as turning your head, raising your arm, or bending over—uncomfortable or painful.

  • When pressure is applied to a trigger point, the muscle may twitch involuntarily. This twitch response is a key indicator of an active trigger point and suggests that the muscle is overly tight and reactive.

  • If untreated, trigger points can become a long-term issue, leading to persistent pain in the same area or recurring flare-ups. Many people with chronic back pain, neck pain, or tension headaches unknowingly have trigger points as the underlying cause.

  • Muscles affected by trigger points may become overly sensitive to touch, making massage or stretching painful. Some people also report increased sensitivity to cold or heat in the affected area.

  • Locating Trigger Points – A trained therapist identifies areas of muscle tightness and sensitivity that contribute to pain.

  • Applying pressure – Sustained pressure is applied to the trigger point using fingers, knuckles, elbows, or special tools.

  • Releasing tension – The pressure helps to break up knots, increase blood flow, and release tension in the affected muscles.

  • Stretching and movement – Gentle stretching or movement may be included to further loosen the muscles and improve flexibility.

Benefits of Trigger Point Therapy

  • Relieves muscle pain and stiffness

  • Improves blood circulation

  • Reduces referred pain (pain in areas distant from the trigger point)

  • Enhances range of motion and flexibility

  • Helps with conditions like headaches, sciatica, neck pain, back pain, and fibromyalgia
