Joint Manipulation in Adelaide
Joint manipulation is a manual therapy technique used by healthcare professionals to treat musculoskeletal issues. It involves applying a controlled, sudden force to a joint, typically to improve mobility, reduce pain, and restore function.
You might recognise it as the technique that often produces a "popping" or "cracking" sound. This sound is caused by the release of gas bubbles in the joint fluid, which is normal and not harmful.
Joint manipulation is commonly used to treat issues like -
Joint paint and stiffness
Headaches (especially tension or cervicogenic types)
Certain sports injuries
Due to its complexity, it's crucial that joint manipulation is performed by a qualified physiotherapist to ensure safety and effectiveness.
Joint Manipulation - FAQs
Most frequently asked questions our patients ask about joint manipulation technique.

Joint manipulation is a hands-on technique used by professionals like physiotherapists to apply a quick, controlled movement to a joint. Related to joint mobilisation, joint manipulation involves stronger, localised end-thrust movement of joints. This treatment is commonly associated with a ‘click’ or ‘popping’ sound, and has been proven to relieve joint pain, increase range of motion, fasten recovery time from injury, and unlocking stiff joints.

✅ Pain Relief
Joint manipulation helps relieve pain in areas like the neck, back, and other joints by releasing built-up tension and improving overall joint mechanics.
✅ Improved Mobility
By targeting stiff or restricted joints, this technique restores natural movement and flexibility—making everyday tasks easier and more comfortable.
✅ Faster Recovery
Joint manipulation can accelerate healing by improving joint function and reducing inflammation or discomfort associated with injury.
✅ Reduced Muscle Tension
Tight muscles surrounding a joint often relax following manipulation, helping to ease movement and reduce strain on the body.
Joint manipulation offers a range of therapeutic benefits, especially when performed by a qualified physiotherapist. If you're dealing with joint stiffness, pain, or limited movement, this hands-on technique may help you feel better, move more freely, and recover faster.
Benefits of Joint Manipulation
✅ Better Joint Function
This treatment helps realign joints and enhance the way they move, which can support better posture, balance, and performance in physical activities.
✅ Drug-Free Treatment Option
Joint manipulation provides a natural alternative to pain medications, making it a safe and non-invasive solution for many musculoskeletal conditions.
✅ Improved Circulation and Nerve Function
Manipulation may also encourage healthy blood flow and relieve pressure on nearby nerves, promoting better overall joint health.
Can I claim Joint Manipulation on Medicare?
Yes, you can claim joint manipulation through Medicare in Australia — but there are certain conditions.
Here's how it works —
1. You need a referral from your GP
To claim under Medicare, your GP must create a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) Plan (also known as an Enhanced Primary Care or EPC Plan). This is for people with chronic or long-term conditions.
2. You may be eligible for up to 5 sessions per calendar year
Medicare will cover part of the cost for up to 5 allied health sessions, which can include physiotherapy (and treatments like joint mobilisation). There is a small gap to pay above this rebate. Reception staff will explain how this works.
